Directions:

1. Chop the almonds into small pieces and pour them into a sealable jar. Set that aside.

2. Zest the 6 limes into a bowl, only shaving off the green skin and avoiding the fleshy, white part. This step may take time.

3. Place the lime zest into the jar with the almond pieces, followed by the cloves.

4. Dice ginger and place that into the jar as well.

5. Split half of a vanilla bean down the center. Remove all the seeds and place them into the jar with the vanilla pod as well.

6. Zest half a teaspoon of nutmeg, and throw the shavings into the jar with the rest of the ingredients.

7. Fill the jar with rum, then seal the container before giving it a good shake. You can use a spatula to push down any ingredients that might creep up along the sides of the jar and submerge them back into the rum.

8. Place the jar in a cool, dark place for 24 hours. During this time, it will lose its bright green hue and turn into a dark brown liqueur bursting with flavor.

9. After 24 hours, filter the homemade Falernum using a coffee filter. You can gently push the ingredients down to speed up the filtering process. Once the Falernum looks nearly finished filtering, gently squeeze the filter paper to drain any excess liquid.
