Enjoy the rich flavor and delightful thickness of Grandma Brown's beans with this easy recipe consisting of ingredients you probably already have at home for the perfect hearty and mouthwatering side dish.

Grandma Brown's baked beans was a brand of baked beans that had been a staple all over Upstate New York since 1937, bringing families together to share a hearty meal of baked beans with the perfect balance of sweetness, tang, and the slightest bite of spice.

The famous baked beans have been taken off supermarket shelves in recent years; however, you can still enjoy the nostalgic taste of Grandma Brown's baked beans with this easy recipe.

Grandma Brown's Baked Beans Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 200g beans
  • 200g finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon black pepper

Directions:

1. Wash the beans under cold water, ensuring you remove any debris or unwanted bits that float to the top. Then soak the beans in water, allowing them to soften.

2. Pour the soft beans and 4 cups of water into a pot, bringing it to a boil. Lower the temperature to a simmer once it starts to boil and allow the beans to cook for around 90 minutes.

3. While the beans cook, mix the molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper in a bowl.

4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

5. Once the beans have finished cooking, layer half in a baking dish, followed by most of the diced onion and the delicious sauce you made in Step 3.

6. Create a second and final layer with the remaining beans, onions, and sauce, and pop the baking dish covered with aluminum foil into the oven for 90 minutes, allowing the flavors to merge and the sauce to thicken.

8. Allow the beans to cool before serving and enjoy.
